Communities of living heritage

On our recent travels, the Museum Studies crew Andrew, Paul, Gina and Lyn have discovered a number of 'heritage networks' where heritage sites, museums, galleries and collections have come together to develop the project of promoting the living history in their communities. Certainly the Brisbane Living Heritage Network and the National Capital Attractions Association (NCAA) are great examples of these networks in action. We can think of other cities that may benefit from such a project...

Introducing Brisbane...

Residents of Brisbane are fortunate to live in such beautiful semi-tropical surroundings. Adding to nature's grandeur are the many heritage and historical buildings and places found in and around Brisbane.

The story of Brisbane is a journey of discovery. Brisbane’s Living Heritage Network aims to make your Brisbane heritage experience one to remember. Each of the Network sites, adds a special chapter to Brisbane's story. Each in turn marks a special milestone on the journey. The information offered here gives only a brief snapshot of the experiences to be had, the real experience begins once you find yourself at a site, exploring the history, enjoying our heritage.

Brisbane's heritage brings to life the people, their stories, the successes and the heartbreaks of the generations who lived their lives between the d'Aguilar Ranges and Moreton Bay, in what has now become a vibrant, metropolitan city.

Brisbane’s Living Heritage Network

Brisbane's Living Heritage Network is an alliance of more than 70 heritage sites and museums engaged in the preservation and interpretation of Brisbane's history and cultural heritage.

The Network aims to raise awareness of the cultural significance of the heritage sector and its valuable contribution to the City of Brisbane, by encouraging visitation and providing information for the Brisbane public and visitors, about Brisbane's heritage.

Objectives of the Project

(a) enhance and effectively share knowledge about Brisbane’s heritage by promoting movable cultural heritage in the community;

(b) develop positive perceptions by residents, visitors and the broader community about Brisbane’s heritage and heritage places;

(c) encourage positive heritage experiences through public programs, publications, marketing and outreach activities;

(d) provide training and professional development opportunities that encourage cultural heritage organisations to care for heritage places and collections.

(e) provide advocacy and support to Brisbane’s cultural heritage community to develop and maintain partnerships with media, business, government and other cultural services organisations to the benefit of Brisbane’s heritage places.

(f) improve levels of community access to Brisbane’s movable cultural heritage collections and heritage places.and to do all acts and things as may be deemed necessary or incidental to the achievement of similar objectives.

Brisbane's Living Heritage Network, proudly sponsored by The Brisbane City Council and The University of Queensland, produces a handy printed Guide with detailed information about all of the member museums and heritage sites. Copies are available by contacting the Brisbane's Living Heritage Network office on (07) 3215 0843, from listed Network venues and Brisbane City Council information centres.
